I'm new here also but I've learned very quickly that the response to this, and rightly so, is not to pick in use locks. Lock picking, especially when you're first starting, can cause damage to the lock and in some cases actually completely break the lock, requiring a call out to a locksmith in some cases.
The first suggestion is to get a lock that is not in use to play with. Once you do that, instead of doing the "furiously poking around" method, try going through the excercise as the following post:
viewtopic.php?t=10677This will allow you to develop a better feel for actually picking a lock instead of lucking into opening it.
As stated - get yourself a lock (or preferably locks) to learn with properly.
