what exactly are security pins?

i ve been practicing picking for 2 months now and with some difficulty i can pick a 5 pin lock . i keep reading about security pins. are they just an extra pin in the lock like all the others? can someone explain?THANKS

security pins are pins with special shapes. those pins are made for picking resistence. but not every security pin makes it really harder to pick the lock, sometimes they make it easier. otherwise normal pins without a special shape can also make it very hard to pick a lock.

and there are also security pins against drilling, these pins consist of hardned steel.

Security pins are most common in higher-end locks, there are quite a few different types of security pins, the most common being a 'spool' pin or what we refer to them here is Australia as 'mushroom' pins. These mushroom pins create false shear lines in the lock which effectively makes it alot more difficult to pick the conventional way. Hardened steel pins are also fitted to most higher-end locks and there is usually just one of them, commonly in the second gallery (chamber). Hardened steel pins slow down the process of drilling out the shear line. I hope this helps.
