H A S security lock help

Postby calvinism » 14 Oct 2010 4:57

hi guys im from south africa. i have a "has" brass padlock that i cant seem to pick consistantly. when i apply torque the first pin binds i push it up and it jumps loose. then all 5 pins do not bind. i have noticed that sumtimes the second pin will bind, when i push up on it it jumps loose and has alot of spring to it, then the first pin does the same. so what i do is i pick the first pin then the second then the first pin and i carry on doing this. the pins start moving more in after every cycle. what type of pins can these be?

Hi calvinism,

welcome to the forum. From your description you're dealing with serrated pins. I don't know the brand HAS so maybe somebody can give you further advice on that particular lock.

It's not the best choice for a beginner to pick a difficult lock, put it aside and practice with something easier first. You'll avoid a lot of frustration now and enjoy that lock much more after a few weeks of practice with standard ones.

Cheers :)

Welcome to the forum, nice to see someone from South Africa here!

Can you tell us how the public or the police look at people who pick locks for fun or as a hobby? Is it legal to own lock picks and to carry them in your pocket? Can you buy them at the store or do you have to order on the internet?

Thanks, and enjoy the forum.

thanx for the help, realy appreciate it.

ive been picking for about a month now. ive recantly started with security pins. i njoy picking cisa locks. they got a few spools in. and viro. im just not use2 the serated pins i guess.

Here in south africa i have not seen one shop that sells picks. i make my own outof jigsaw and hacksaw blades.

As for the law about the sport, i had a friend who's dad was a lock smith and said that if you get caught doing sumthing doesnt evan matter if you part of a sport group, you gana "pick" up some trouble. thats all ive heard.

So you're not a total newbie 8) go on with the serrated pins, if you can pick a cisa or a viro I'm sure that an HAS lock is not a problem for you. Just keep the tension light and try to remember which pins reset the lock so to avoid to push them too many times when you start again.
If after a couple of minutes the lock won't open you probably overset a pin: completely release tension and start again.

Cheers :)
