Holes in the bottom of padlocks?

Postby Knowthebird » 18 Dec 2010 1:53

Hey,
Alot of times Ive seen one or two holes on the bottom or side of a padlock. What are these usually for?

Ah, it's nothing to do with security: those holes are there to allow water to drain out (particularly important for locks mounted outside in cooler climates!). :)

Masterlock 175,176,177 combo locks have a hole near the bottom for a warded key to reset the combination.
The BiLock isn't the first bump proof pin tumbler because it isn't a pin tumbler.
And it's called a shear line, not a "sheerline".

See http://lockwiki.com/index.php/Master_Lock_No_175 for a photo showing this.

In Deviant's Practical Lock Picking, he refers to that hole as the "Secret Weakness in 90% of Padlocks"...

He later goes on to explain the drain holes. :-)

Great book and highly recommended. He describes both the basics and some advanced picking. Also, makes a purpose of explaining proper terminology. So that not only will you be able to walk the walk, you will be able to talk the talk too.
