Does this door mechanism sound familiar?

Postby TLIII » 22 Jan 2011 1:16

I'm kicking myself for not having done a better inspection. That being said, I'll describe what I saw (remember).

While in vacation in Rome, I stayed in a newly constructed "bed and breakfast" otherwise known as someones rented condo. Now, the condo was through a key-coded gate, key-passed building entry, and finally, the focus of my inquiry, the vault like front door.

I believe the key was a dimple type. It took 3 half-rotations of the key to retract all of the door pins (540 degrees). I know there were 4 door pins where the latch/receiver would be, at least 2 hinge pins, and 2 more pins on the top of the door.

So...does anyone know where I can get a door mechanism/lock like this? A name, anything similar?

As far as hobbies go, I have too many  , woodworking is one of them and I want to make my own front door; hopefully with a lock system similar to this.

P.S. the condo was not in a dangerous area to my knowledge

I don't have enough familiarity with the common Italian models to make a guess at which model was installed at your friend's place... but if you Google "multipoint lock", there's a good amount of info there (including some installation videos, diagrams, etc.).

Hope that helps!

Any vocabulary helps. I've tried looking up many words/phrases, but since I don't know what its called I can't get a good hit. FYI: the local locksmith shop had no idea what it was, nor did the door place, both were interested in seeing one.

Here in Italy almost every door in big cities condo is armored. Usually with 8-10 locking points and 2 locks. Google cisa or mottura or potent and "porta blindata". Don't expect to find the exact model you saw, there are thousands of different small factories and models.

If you are going to build a wooden model you're from the last century... nowadays they make only steel ones (with thin wooden decorative panels).

Cheers :)
