Replacement springs for Kwikset smartkey

Postby MrGlass » 23 Feb 2011 2:19

So, a little while ago a friend recommended that I buy a cheap deadbolt, learn to rekey it, and use it to gradually up my lockpicking skill.

I went on Ebay and bought the cheapest kwickset available. To my luck, I happened upon a smartkey model. Not knowing the difference, I bought it, watched a couple videos online, and took it apart. I figured out pretty quickly something was up, and actually got it fully apart without any problems. I lined everything up, took a look, did some searching, and eventually figured out my mistake.

When I went to put everything back, I found it impossible to put the little plastic plate it comes with back down on the springs properly. in the midst of my struggles, one wiggled its way out, shot itself at my chest, and disappeared.

Does anyone know what size spring the kwikset smartkey uses, and possibly where I can purchase some? I see http://www.clksupplies.com sells springs pretty cheaply for large amounts, but I don't know which springs to get.

Can't help you on the spring replacement, but Kwik Smartkey and Schlage SecureKey both use different mechanisms from conventional pin tumblers and would not be a good starting point.

To learn SPP, buy a couple cheaper padlocks (Master #3 family, lower end Brinks, etc) and go to a flea market or Habitat for Humanity ReStore and get old residential deadbolt or knob cylinders. They'll probably give you a deal since you don't need complete sets or keys.
