Union Panel Locks

Postby aceg » 25 Feb 2011 5:58

Hello, I have a job involving metal doors and understand that my best bet is Union Panel Locks. Quite expensive though I have found a good source on EBAY for just £25 so I'm good to go. I would appreciate advice from anyone on the level of security that these locks offer. I ask as it's quite important that the customer has a fair degree of confidence in the lock. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you.

From memory there are under 200 differs , normally with a BGA prefix,a lot of the larger locksmiths in the UK will have the keys or space and depth keys for these.
Not very secure but can be an absolute nightmare to fit.
Check the old lock for the handle configuration , as at one point about 20 years ago they were changed.
You need the correct handles to fit, and they could cost as much as the lock
In the Uk you would probably only get them from Aldridge or Duffells

Thanks very much for the information, this gives me a much better idea of what I'm dealing with and I can discuss with the customer with a good degree of knowledge now. Useful tip re. the handles too. I was getting prices of £60 plus (locks only) but the ebay price of £25 for the locks certainly makes the job cost effective. The customer may be be swayed by this as it does appear that there are very limited options for the metal doors in question.
Thanks again folks.

Forgot to say , get the correct handing,
left opening out/in
right opening out/in.
If you get the wrong one it will not fit, .If you are getting from ebay makesure they have the correct one. 1in 4 of getting it wrong

Thanks for the advice mach1, I'll watch out for that. The ebay listing offers 5 different configs (as you say right hand out/left hand in etc, all with code numbers (22931 / 22932 / 22933 / 22934 / 22511). I'll check each lock prior to ordering. Thanks again.
