Here in Canada the most common types of locks are pin tumbler aswell. The three most common brands are Weiser, Schlage, and store-brand locks like Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, Peavey Mart, and Revy stores carry...I don't care to remember what they call their brands, they're all cheap junk.
Anyways, commercial hardware here goes across the entire spectrum from Weiser, Schlage, (cheap junk brands), Sargent, Yale, Corbin, and all the myriad varieties of restricted and high security hardware that's out there.
For beginners, in addition to what Bitter Man has suggested, it would be best to start with inexpensive and low-security padlocks like the ones you find at your local hardware store. Once you have built up your confidence with these you can progress to the more difficult stuff.
Keep us posted on your progress and don't hesitate to ask questions.
Hope that helps.
