Weiser deadbolt mod. to ASSA lock, It does not work. WHY?

Postby Truck » 8 Nov 2004 20:59

A locksmith has tried to modify my Weiser Deadbolt into ASSA lock. The deadbolt is keyed on both side. The locksmith said it must be change both core into ASSA because the ASSA tail piece is not turn the same angle as the Weiser. Ok, after both side changed into ASSA, the lock open and close inconsistently. It does not retract and extend the bolt normally when the key turn back to center. The locksmith also try to change the bolt to ASSA but it also does not work properly.

The locksmith does not know why and he said that it should work.
I have been trying to figure it out but do not know neither.

WHY?

Is the tail piece properly aligned with the latch?

We just re-painted some of our house entry doors, and I removed the KIK, and deadbolt. One one of the doors, I inserted the tail the wrong way, and the lock did not work correctly.

Hope that is all that is wrong with yours.

For 'poops-and-grins' try rotating the tail at the point that it meets the plug. If that does nothing, I am wrong, and will survive. Please reply if that is not the answer.

No, that is not the answer. Well, don't worry guys. The locksmith refunded the money. I might purchase a brand new Medeco with both key side.

I am just curious and want to know why?

I myself am curious as to why someone would want to modify a crappy weiser by using ASSA inserts...that's nuts..if you want security he should have at least installed a grade two or better lock.

Hmmm...I'd have to check, but I wonder if it has something to do with how the cams/tail pieces are timed on the cylinder itself...perhaps they don't accomodate the same range of motion?

Find another locksmith, what this one is trying to do brings his credentials for the job into question

Yeah...I have a hard time believing a decent locksmith would even suggest something like that. As for cheaper...it'd be cheaper and faster just to install an ASSA deadbolt and call it done.
