Key in knob kwikset lock

Postby Chronos » 21 Nov 2004 15:53

I have one of these on my door and for some reason I just can't for the life of me pick it. I've picked loads of kwiksets and shlages and even a couple yales, but for some reason this is giving me trouble. So far I have only tried pin-by-pin picking on this, would raking yield better results? Any tips for picking this would be greatly appreciated.

I've got no idea. It was on the door when I moved into the house and I have since lost the key, I never use it so that doesn't matter, I just thought it would be good to practice on. The dead bolt on the same door was a kwikset so maybe this is too? There are no markings, just a brass colored knob.

Well i believe (someone correct me if im wrong) that most key in knob Kwiksets are brass colored, so...

What door is it on, i mean bathroom, front door, etc...
you say there's deadbolt on the same door, so my first guess is front or back door?

When I opened the door I found that on the little metal plate on side of the door says kwikset, so yes, it is a kwikset. Also yes, it is on my front door.

Hmm, well from just knowing that its a Kwikset, im not sure how much advice can be offered. Raking will more than likely yield better results.
If you had any idea what model it was, that could help, does it have any other distinct markings or names on it?

Lol, you also said that you never use it, that mean you never use your front door?

Yah, I had a friend attempt it and he picked it and said that on a scale from one to ten it was a .7 :( I was a little embarrased, I figured out what I was doing wrong though, I was expecting the plug to turn like all the deadbolts I have picked but the entire handle turns instead so I had it picked I just didn't noitice.
P.S. No, I use the door, just not the lock, before I learned to pick locks I was a bit naive and figured the kwikset deadbolt would be enough protection. Now it's a yale with security pins btw, still not too great, but a definite improvement.

I regards to the question of wether raking would work. I prefer to rake key-in-the-knob locks, and "feel" deadbolts. I hardly ever try to rake a deadbolt. That may be a mistake on my part but it's just the way I do it.

don't get caught up in the hype about brands of locks that are so hard/easy to pick.

The biting has more to do with it
