Guard 836|50 Padlock

Postby cruisecontrol » 30 Nov 2011 16:43

Hello all!

I'm having trouble with a Guard 836|50 padlock. I have been trying to pick this lock with no success. I have used both hard and light tension including the in-between. When I use light tension, after setting the first pin and attempt to set the subsequent pin, the initial pin drops back down which is indicated based on the clicking sound I hear. This continues to happen even as I increase tension slightly upon re-attempt.

What am I doing wrong here?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Check this out, it may help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8H47mLe ... re=related

When you start picking, does the plug move about 10 degrees and then stops? This is called a false-set and it happens because there are spool security pins inside those locks. What the heck is a spool pin you ask? This video explains what is going on: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4hoGY3SAtU

The right amount of tension can be tricky, its something you learn from experience and with enough practice you will get good at it so keep trying. Usually people do too little or far too much. The too little may be your case, so hopefully that video, and others on youtube can visually show you what others are doing with their wrenches.

Let us know when you've picked it. =)

Hi Squelchtone, and thank you for the info.

In response to your question, I have had the cylinder turn slightly as you described. That said, most of the time it is firm, giving me no indication that I'm anywhere near setting the pins.
