Laminated lock took apart

Postby Darkness1569 » 6 Jul 2012 9:17

For all the people out there that like me had never seen a laminated lock apart. I took mine apart so you wouldn’t have too. Enjoy!! :D
*Note* The plates are not in order
*Side note* This lock is a Brinks™ 40mm Laminated Padlock from Wal-Mart™

Thanks for the insight. I've wanted to do this since I started picking.

How long did it take to dismantle? It was pretty easy once you ground off the rivet heads, wasn't it...Did the rivets press out pretty easily too? I've got a few dead and gutted assemblies. I like to measure the hole consistency from one lamination to another to determine the quality of the tooling in China. I consulted Brinks in 2006 and was impressed at how backwards a stamping and assembly plant could be but despite their incredible inefficiencies, they build a ton of locks.

If you want to take a laminated lock apart without ruining it, and have access to a
milling machine, try using a non-center cutting end mill. If you plunge down on the
rivet, you can remove the metal from around the shaft or hole. If you are able to do
this, you can take the plate off, pull the core. Once you put the lock back together,
you can peen the rivet. If you have the right bit, one will hardly notice the lock has
been taken apart.

I used an off the shelf four fluke end mill. I suppose a place that sharpens end
mills could grind out the center of the bit. Might even be bits out there for removing
rivets.

Great advice Jim. I guess that if you thin and peen the rivet it loses some of its strength. Definitely better than trashing the lock.

Cheers :)
