Brinks Combo

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Brinks Combo

Postby Exodus5000 » 11 Dec 2004 4:17

I've been playing with my brinks combination padlock. I found that in addition to my original combination which is 7-14-8, if I begin by spinning the dial counter clockwise I can also get the lock to open with the combination 39-18-8. (Something similar should happen to this on master padlocks too if i'm not mistaken.)

So I figured that I would try to look for a relationship between these two combinations.
*NOTE* First this information is probably useless, second someone may have already posted it before, thirdly take note that it's 3am for me here - so bare with me.

Here are the following combos:

7-14-8
39-18-8

When reffering to the numbers, i'll refer to them by "c" for combination, then either a 1 or 2 for combo one or two, followed by a 1,2,or3 for corresponding wheel. Example: c11 = 7. c12 = 14. c13 = 8. c21 = 39. c22 = 18. c23 = 8.
While looking for relationships between the two combos I came up with some formulas. I'm still looking for more, but just for fun let me post what I have:

c21-c11=32
c22-c12=4
c13-c13=0

c21-c11-c22=c12
c21-c11-c12=c22

(c21-c11)
--------- = third number
(c22-c12)

If the above statement is true, doesn't this prove there is a proportional relationship between the two combos?
Havn't been in a math class for years now, and i'm just about tired out. So have at it I guess, if i'm just rambling nonesense feel free to flame me.

mmmm....kay. Looks like I got a little over zealous last night. I'm just going to ... slowly back away.

Late night?

If it helps any, I had a brand new one with the combination 28-00-33

Using your first formula, the alternate combination should have been 21-4-33 (28+32 and then -39 since it wraps around).

And it didn't open.

Back to the drawing board, no?

I think it's a picket fence thing, you have to count the value "0" too, so wouldn't you subtract 40 then instead of 39?

Maybe I'm wrong, but give the combination 20-4-33. Make sure you clear the lock counter clockwise, and put the first number in counterclockwise as well, then go past 20 once and stop on 4, then counterclockwise again to 33.

If it doesn't work then I guess all i've lost is a nights sleep :)

BTW - just for kicks, you can find the combination to open the lock counterclockwise by watching the disks line up in the lock by looking in the shackle hole. Maybe you'de want to post what your combination is for kicks.
