schlage key wont go all the way in...

Postby thefed17 » 17 Feb 2013 22:08

So ive been raking and spp-ing everything in sight as im new to the hobby. Picked my moms schlage with a bogota rake...she called later saying her key wont go in all the way. Indeed it will not...about 3/16" shy. Any advice on how to rectify this, or what likely happened? .

For the record, my schlage 5-pin bump key fits all the way while my 6 pin stops short

But based on length of the keys, it appears to be a. 5 pin lock

As a fellow enthusiast, I can say its really fun, but remember, try not to pick anything being used... for reasons such as that...

Since it apparently has something wrong already, try feeling with a hook to see if any pin is stuck in the hull, and perhaps try to dislodge it?
If it works, it ain't wrong! -GWiens2001

I used a little hook shaped pick and tried to dislodge what i could and it worked. Being stubborn, i raked it again and same issue...cant un-stick it this time lol. Is this possibly a security feature?

Buy her a new lock and don't try to pick it.

little graphite and bump the key in then rake it in and out a bit to get the graphite into all the moving parts. if you dont have graphite try crushing up a bunch of pencil lead and blowing it in there some how. That should work. If not there might be a bur inside the pins channel. in that case you will wanna disassemble the lock to try and asses the problem. if its damaged take it to a locksmith and have it repaired. dont buy new when you can easily fix it for cheaper.

Your 5 pin pump key goes in but her 5 pin house key doesn't? If the door is open take it to a locksmith and have him fix it for you and then don't pick a lock in use.
