Basic tips

Postby AMaturePerson » 9 Apr 2013 14:31

I am new at this and all the things I've seen have not been very useful. All I want is the basics of how to open a lock. Combo, Key, ANYTHING. Please help and tell me things to look for, not just a load of technical terms.

So basically you want instructions on how to pick a lock without having to understand how anything works? Sure thing.

For the locks with the jaggy keys, insert one of the L-shaped things into the key hole and try to turn it. It won't turn much, but that's ok. You need to put a pick in there too... see, the L-shaped thing turns the lock and the pick moves the pins. Clever, right?

So, once your L-shaped thing is in the key hole, insert any pick (the things with the handles and the funny little ends on them) all the way into the key hole and wiggle the pins around while trying to turn the key hole very gently with your L-shaped thing. If any of this is too technical please let me know, I'd be glad to simplify things further.

As for what pick to use, just go for the one you like the look of most to start with. Wiggle it around until it works or until you get bored, whatever comes first... if it doesn't work then try the next one until you get one that opens the lock. If you get through them all and the lock doesn't open, unfortunately your lock is unpickable. But you should be able to open roughly 5% of locks with this approach. Best of luck :)

Oh and for combination locks, just try all the obvious combinations that people use first. A good trick is to ask google to suggest a cool combination for "you" to use for "your" ( ;) ) lock, and you can use those suggestions to try and guess it with! If none of those work, you'll just have to go through all the numbers while you watch a movie. Boring I know, but not as boring as having to learn about how they actually work!

Hope this helps buddy!

Reading Solomon's advice I think we should make it sticky. If only I knew about this when I got into this lock thingy. I would be a pro picker by now....

(   I'm not sure how could I miss this reply. Thanks MBI for calling it to my attention, it really cracked me up :D) )

As for how to pick: google is your best friend at he beginning. try Schuyler's channel on youtube

Have you read the guides on lockpicking?

Which ones?

So what exactly would you like from us?
You have been given links with more information than most people can read in a day.

Solomon has taken the time to explain to you in the simplest of terms what you need to do, and your still not happy.

Perhaps we should send a few members at their own expense to your house/ apartment / living space to hold your hand while they teach you to correctly use the tools you have ?

I'm glad to see you have a sense of humour. :)

If you want to get good, you have to understand the mechanism and more importantly why picking is actually possible in the first place. You have to get into the technical side of things and understand what's happening inside the lock, otherwise you won't able to relate to anything you're feeling in there. I made this mistake when I first started out, so trust me when I say this... you need to get a good hold on it mentally before you start poking around in there, otherwise you'll get very frustrated, very fast. If all the technical stuff is too boring, or you can't get your head around it, progressive pinning would be a good idea because you'll actually be able to just figure it out for yourself that way.

But still, even just a little understanding of how the lock works and how the binding defect affects the components will make your life so much easier, so I'd suggest boning up on your theory a little before you start with that anyway.

I highly recommend reading JK's article on SPP. Once you get your head round that, take a look at DB's beginner's picking exercise and also his article on The 7 habits of highly effectual lockpickers. It's all great reading... and if you're thirsty for more in-depth information after that then you can check out my ebook. It's free, I'll send you the link if you want it.
