Is this lock secure enough?

Postby calibrationx » 16 May 2013 19:38

I'm going to be commuting by bike to work and there are bike lockers in a parking garage at work. I feel like the campus is reasonably secure and there are cameras by the bike lockers.

The bike lockers lock like this:

However, they do not have the vertical lock holes (only the holes that are with the handle).

I bought an ABUS 28/70 lock, but after seeing some videos and discussion, it seems that this lock is pickable. Should I go to an ABUS 20/70 instead? or maybe 24/70?

Thanks for your help!

If you want an unpickable lock, go with an ABLOY Protec. For all intents and purposes, it is unpickable. However, most thieves do not pick the lock, they cut it.
Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

That is true. In terms of security, do you think the 28/70 is enough for an application such as this?

Thanks for your input!

I wish we had bike lockers here, I've never seen one before! I commute to work too, 18 km in the morning, 18 km in the evening... if it doesn't rain it's very relaxing and I feel good after my ride.

I think the lock you have is enough for the application. The weak point could be the locker handle, so don't be concerned about the lock. Actually you have a pretty nice lock, works great for most applications.

Cheers :)

it looks like the locker is going to be more vulnerable than any lock that you put on it.

In a case where your bike is totally hidden from sight (I have never seen a bike locker, so that might not be the case) it might actually be better to have a sort of "middle of the road" lock. The logic being that a thief would have to judge the worth of the bike based solely on the price of the lock. If you have a really expensive nice lock it would be expected that you don't want it to be stolen because your bike is really expensive too. In that case, like the others already said, the locker itself looks less secure (cuttable?) than your average lock would be.

In any case, hopefully the cameras will be enough deterent.

Just my 2 cents!

I agree with phyringe and femurat.
The lock should be enough. If you go higher the weak-point would be the locker.
A thief won't pick, he will cut the shackle.
Make your padlock look old shabby and dirty. Put a few flacks of paint or sth like that. Just be careful not to obstruct the working of the lock with it. (Keyhole! :) )
I would still put a bike lock on the bike inside the locker. Even if they open the locker they should be at least annoyed. :D
Abus makes not too bad bike locks too. Just avoid anything with a combination lock or a cable. The ones with jointed bars is pretty good I believe.

So I think the lock you choose is good. I would get the 20/70, but I'm a lock enthusiast. I use an Anchor las (a very good and correspondingly expensive padlock maker, a total overkill for a wooden locker) on my locker. Ain't no fucker gonna steal my jumper and notes the easy way...
In case you need any further advice your country could be useful to determine which lock makers are available to you. :)

Come to think about it since you bought the 28/70 already just stick with it. It should be enough. Even I wouldn't buy another one if I had a 28/70 already.
To infinity... and beyond!

I'm glad I was understood, ARF-GEF got me. It's like urban camouflage; don't stick out to be noticed, don't be so crumby that it's an easy target. Good point though about double locking the bike. Put a nice lock on the wheel/frame, and a less crazy lock on the locker door. For those of us who love locks, nothing seems like too much! Although it can be tedious to have to unlock multiple locks to get to something all the time, it might be worth it on your mode of transportation. Especially if you do have an expensive bike. I have friends who are into biking kind of like I am into locks/lockpicking and they have bikes that are worth multiple thousands of dollars! I don't have a lock worth that much though... not yet!

If I was a thief I would pass by a locker with this lock:
