Abus 65/50 "Binding"

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Abus 65/50 "Binding"

Postby MyHeartIsPicked » 17 Aug 2013 8:35

I've been trying to pick an abus 65/50 for a while now, and have managed to do it somehow (when I wasn't really paying attention) three times. I'm trying again and I've managed to pick the lock to a false set, a youtube video recommended checking to see which pins are "binding" are the lock had reached a false set. What is binding?

Thanks in advance,
MHIP

Put some medium to heavy tension on. Put a hook in the keyway all the way to the back. Now move the pick across the pins. You can hear them springing as your drag the pick over them. There will be one that feels solid rather than springing naturally.

You now know which pin is binding.

Feel so you can put the tip of your pick on top of that pin, and while releasing tension a little, press on it until you feel or hear a click. That pins is now set. Hopefully, not over-set.

Repeat the above for all of the pins.

Mr. Anybody has provided a very clear explanation of how to find and at a binding on, which is what you asked. However, from your wider explanation of what you're experiencing, I think you need to find the pins which are in false set. If you've already got the lock info false set, you need to apply gentle tension, then proceed through the keyway gently probing each pin. The pins which are set will either be rigid, or loose depending on the orientation of the lock. Either way they will not be springy anymore. The ones which are at false set will be slightly springy, and will cause the plug to turn back against your tension tool when you press on them. With care you can push them past the false set, and into true set. Doing this may drop some other pins, so you may have to preform this step multiple times.
