a friend of mine gave me this cool old lock. I tried picking it but was unsuccessful. anyone know what it is. it looks old but I don't think it is.

so gordon is it a replica of an old lever lock? I've never seen one with a hole in the back before.

That padlock was probably made in India in the last 20 years, looks like the kind of faux-antique hand made stuff that is popular there. The hole in the back is not uncommon, it is used to make sure the key is inserted all the way and at the correct dead on angle so the levers are lifted to the proper height and not too low or too high.

That hole in the back is a godsend, makes tensioning extra easy. I wrote a guide on these a while ago, should help you get it open. Try picking it from the open position back to locked with the shackle open first, so you can see the levers. Good way to make sure your wires are working properly before you attempt to pick it properly.

Edit: Forgot to add, the actuasl diagrams aren't in the original post. Check the 5th post down. :D
