converting baldwin mortise lock to keyless

Postby victorylocksmith » 23 Jun 2014 0:25

anyone have any advice on this? i have been looking at a lot of different locks but the door frame only gives me about 5" of space before it hits the glass. the baldwin body is a 6375 and im having a hell of a time trying to figure out what i am going to do. So not only does it have to be a mortise touchpad but, it has to fit given mortise body allocated space. Either that, or ill be stuck all day filling the door in with wood filler.

Probably not a job for a beginner, but I would use a SDC or IEI pad with a modified Baldwin mortise lock. http://www.marray.com/Baldwin-Mortise-Lock-Modification-p95.html You would of course need a door loop or transfer hinge and run your wires to the lock. I did one last week but coring a door can be tricky when coring down so in this case we removed a piece from the edge of the door, routed a channel and reattached the door edge.

You could do the same with an electric strike.

Another way is to plate the door and install lock of choice, usually look like arse.

Yet another way is to render the mortise lock operable as a passage lock only and add a combination deadbolt, Emtek and Baldwin sell them that should match existing hardware.

There are loads of ways to tackle this job. I can think of at least a few others.

Also important is thickness of door and size of mortise pocket. Baldwin residential stuff is often smaller than commercial mortise locks, but commercial mortise locks can be made into combination locks or offered as electrified for use with a keypad.
