Broken Window Lock Problem

Broken Window Lock Problem

Postby crusaderman » 5 Nov 2014 7:28

I was at a customers house yesterday. He has one of these Stormseal tilt and open upvc double glazed windows in his bathroom which he couldn't open. (Its hinged on the left hand side).

After removing the handle, I could see that the small geared wheel had broken away and no longer engaged with the rack. He has another window with an identical lock in it, so I dis-assembled this one to get a good idea of how it worked and took a photo of it at the same time (see pic below).

I think the reason the lock broke in the first place was because the customers son had at some stage taken the handle off and then replaced it "up-side down". This meant that a great deal of force had been applied to the gearwheeel in the wrong direction, i.e. anti clockwise.

I could see from this other lock that it might be possible to drill a small hole just below the geared wheel housing in order to gain access to a slotted hole in the back of the rack and then hopefully "push" the rack in a downward motion to release the 2 rollers.

However, there was just no way to make it budge....very difficult to get any kind of purchase or real force on the edge of the slot.

I wondered if any of you have come across this problem yourselves? This particular locking mechanism also has a bolt that goes up into the top of the frame. The make is a S2-TRIAL.

The best way to open these if the mechanism seizes is to pry the window open. Use a wide (3-4") tool to avoid marking the frame. I have a special upvc pry tool which looks like a flat spade, but prior to this I used the top cap from a Chubb 3g114 gripped in molegrips. It should be easy to pop the window open as it is only secured with rollers.
