Pelican Bay prison locks

Postby docjon » 13 Dec 2014 20:39

Was watching history or discovery channel or one of those today and the topic was about Pelican Bay prison in California. I tend to look more at locks now when watching the tv. The guards were in the process of feeding the prisoners. They had to unlock a plate on the door of the cell In order to pass the food into the cell. I guess I was taken aback when I looked and there was a master lock. A 3 or 5 but one in that category. I realize they can't get out thru that hole but I am sure they could use the lock for some nefarious purpose. Plus, if they use those cheap locks there , where else might they use them. docjon

The padlocks used on the food pass in some prisons are meant to be disposable in case a set of keys goes missing...

It is much less labor intensive to go from door to door and remove one padlock to replace it for another... It would require a lot more time and labor to use re-keyable padlocks than they would be worth in the "value" of having a product which could be reused...

Some prisons use the big mogul cylinder keyed locks on the food passes... Imagine the labor involved to rekey all of those attached locks if a key went missing...
