old weathered Braslok, is it shot?

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

old weathered Braslok, is it shot?

Postby Comrade627 » 18 Feb 2015 2:54

Found this fella attached to some rusted unidentifiable... thing.
There's zero play in the shackle, as well as the plug. You can see where it's rusted/limed in place. Is it shot, or would a bath in various chemicals clear it out?

I've gone as far as hitting the shackle with a hammer to break it loose and no dice. For the plug, I stuck a flathead in the front of the keyway to try and get it wiggling, still no dice. After clearing out the dead bug nest, I noticed the pins still seem to be functioning normally.Image

I've got a padlock in similar conditions from an antique store. I've tried many things and the one that worked better was to leave it in a can of coke overnight.

Good luck :)

Hoooooold on. You're asking me to waste Coke?

Alright alright, I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure if it will work the same, since the Coke is different here (Japan).

Will follow up.

Make sure to fill the keyway by gently shaking the padlock while it's underwater... I mean, undercoke. Avoid a big air bubble in there or it would really be wasted coke.

Cheers :)

Yes, Coke is different there, but if it is carbonated and not with artificial sugar, it should work fine. It is mostly the carbonic acid that eats the rust and lime away.

That said, do not mix soda with artificial sweetener with sugar-free Kool Aid.

Undercoke jiggle, will do.
It's real sugar, cane sugar to be exact, and by the way it trumps US coke hands down. Little things like that make me dread moving back to the States.

Gordon... artificially sugared cola and sugar free koolaid? That sounds absolutely terrible but seriously, story time for you.

A couple seconds (max) of high pressure volcano, then completely flat soda.

Think it works with normal soda, too.
