Miwa KHS.R. Partial tear down

Postby Comrade627 » 1 Mar 2015 8:41

So a little while ago I'd read on here that MIWA made double sided wafer locks. With this in mind I went after a few trying to pick them. No dice. So today I decided to pick up a MIWA "KHS.R", got home and went to town in it. Needless to say, what I found was not only 9 "wafer" system, but one mess of a complicated cam rig, a very odd front retaining...thing with pins that acted as berrings, and a long single rail that would fall between the wafers when aligned, allowing the plug to spin instead of the wafers becoming flush with the plug. Basically, you'd have to see this thing. If I just somehow missed this design type in lock learning 101, do advise.

If you guys want to see more of this fella, pics, videos whatever, just let me know. I've got a clip of the guts moving with the key uploading now, I'll link it later.

Edit: it's only a partial tear down because I honestly doubt I'd be able to put it back together if I went any further.

STUFF IS FALLING OFF GORDON HELPImage

The top left 6 pieces make up the cam. Yep, 6. Bottom left goes on the keyway, and another housing... thing pictured on the right.Image

These bits acted as a second housing, wrapping around a 3rd housing.

Back of the plug. Oh look 4 more pieces of the cam system!Image

Here's the part that went around the keyway. It has 6 pins that I believe act as berrings. They also like to fall out a lot, since they aren't held in place when the ring thing isn't installed.Image

The other 4 pieces of the cam system.Image

Plug removed. Here you can see the long rail that receeds into the plug to allow it to rotate. ImageImage

Rail removed.Image

Not the goldish parts, but the gunmetal parts are what move around.Image

Here they are aligned with the key inserted, you can see the area where the rail receeds down into.Image

Dismantling / reassembling a lock like that can easily get you into the "fun" category just between bathing the cat and getting caught straddling the electrified barbed wire fence.

It is good that you stopped when you did. Otherwise, you will know a WHOLE LOT more about that lock then you ever wanted to !!

Thanks for the pics ...

Well said. Someday I'll take it apart all the way, someday.

Also, here's the clip of the wafers moving.

The 'rails' you mentioned and pictured are sidebars. Those are what fully locks the plug from rotating.

The wafers (thought they were levers similar to the Ingersoll, but looks like I was mistaken) have a true gate that lines up when the correct key inserted and several false gates to thwart picking. When the gates line up, the sidebar can be forced down into them when the plug is turned. When in the locked position, springs force the sidebar out into the grooves in the cylinder and the wafers are moved out of the correct position.

Great pics, thanks for the teardown. Will help in any way I can.

Interesting. I'll tear more into it in due time.

As GWiens already pointed out those "rails" are the sidebars which keep the plug from turning until the wafers are properly aligned.
Looking at your photos though it looks a bit like a variation on the Fichet 480 system (teardown thread here: http://www.lockpicking101.com/viewtopic.php?t=12413).
If it works anything like that Fichet mechanism, they are a huge pain to pick and usually end up requiring specialized tools or some unusual techniques.

Yea it's similar to that fella. I'm not sure what tools to use, but I'm sure I'll get it someday.

Before moving to the really crazy decoder and make-up key type tools, double sided wafer rakes (the ones that look like Klingon torture devices, not the 'Chicago Jiggler' types) might be a good place to start. The binding order is going to be all over the place there and there look to be several false gates on those levers which can trip you up.
