My new miracle lock

Postby nickmannnxx » 14 Mar 2015 21:59

I just picked up this lock on ebay. Im pretty sure its a lever lock but, the the cuts on the keys are all slighty angled. This lock is really clean, Im pretty sure its NOS.

That lock uses what is known as the AVA mechanism, here is a detailed breakdown from one of our members:

very nice score, those locks were always a favorite of mine!

Cool lock, It looks like a lock that was in Squelchtone's collection of military locks. Have a few different manufacturers utilised a similar design?

I think (but could be wrong) that ingersoll had locks similar to these. Pretty sure they make a 10 lever version.

That is correct. The Ingersoll version was a much more difficult pick than the AVA version, but was more expensive to build.

I want to have the Ingersoll version too. What would be considered a fair price for one on ebay? I havent tried picking this one yet. Ill have to find a tutorial on picking it.

I'd say the Miracle could be comparable to the AVA mechanism, but definitely not to the Ingersoll 10 lever. The mechanism of the Miracle operates in a very different way to the Ingersoll, even though both mechanisms interact with 1 side bar.

The Ingersoll has a pack of 10 (or 6) pivoting levers which are separately sprung and pivot on one axis. They're set up alternately left and right to correspond to the key bitting. It's also a very different key than the AVA/Miracle mechanism as there are no angular cuts. Actually, probably the best way to demonstrate the difference in these two mechanisms is to compare the key.

Some people refers to the pack in the Miracle as sliders and some refer to them as wafers. There is no pivoting motion, and they are not levers. They also not sprung like the Ingersoll. But there is a pack of 10.

Like Gordon mentioned, the Ingersoll a very tricky pick. This is mainly because of the rubber 'O' ring that's mounted at the back of the plug. This dampens feedback in a big way, and the only way to be sure the levers are setting correctly is to apply very heavy tension.
