Saving a 5200 American Lock

Saving a 5200 American Lock

Postby BSG_314159 » 23 Mar 2015 21:37

At my work people love to cut locks instead of looking for keys... because of this I run across alot of cut locks. My latest bunch of cut locks had a 2008 silver 5200 american lock (civilian) 5 pin. The biggest difference is that it is not key retaining. I picked it open and took it apart and decided I wanted to turn it into 6 pin 5200 (military lock).

(left is from US military lock, right is from the civilian 5200)

I picked open several 5200 US american locks that had uncut shackles to replace the cut one on the silver 5200. Now I have a bunch of 5200 pieces :)

So I started this hobby just for the picking but I have found a passion in a lot more areas of locksmithing to include pinning and rekeying (using a hand file)

(this is what I choose to put inside of this 6 pin 5200 lock)

(All torn apart with new parts) new shackle and key retaining locking cam.

Now for the end result a two tone 5200 MUT! I had to file the key down to accept the pins I salvaged from my other keyless american locks. Found a couple 6 pin keys with no home and made one work!

Really fun project.

Nice job on the refurb.
I like to blast em' with rubbing alcohol and Qtips after sanding off any burrs that cause it to not run smooth as ice.

Nice job, BSG. You can also go to mrlock.com and order replacement shackles in various lengths.

You are finding for yourself, as many of us do, that picking requires understanding of locks, which in turn leads to a desire to learn more about other aspects of locks and locksmithing. Keep up the good work!
