Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Star (brand) lock help needed.

Postby WestCoastPicks » 15 Mar 2016 16:20

Hey guys, I got this lock after it was removed and replaced with another lock. No keys and no info on this lock, I'm wondering what anyone here knows about these locks?

It looks like a safety deposit box style lock. It's not easy to pick, has security pins and is quite heavy for the size.
Simply googling star lock or star k898 brings up so much stuff, I can't find anything on it. Anything you guys could input would be more than I have now lol.. Thanks guys.

It makes me think of a mail box lock.

Just when you finally think you have learned it all, that is when you learn that you don't know anything yet.

Lol, I have many times. But I am also interested in the lock itself.

It could well be a safety deposit box lock, Or as you say, a mail box lock. If it helps, it's about 2 inches deep, and the last half inch is threaded.
I would like to make a SPP video featuring it, but know nothing about it.

The stamp to me looks more like something a locksmith stamped into the lock than a manufacturer due to the off center placement of it (this is just thinking out loud, I am sure I will be corrected if wrong). I found a vintage lock with the word star on it, and no manufacturer that was in the first few hundred entries on Google. I did however find that there are a ton of locksmiths who seem to like the name "Star" which lends merit to this theory. Are there any other identifiable markings on this that we cant see from pictures?

That looks to be exactly like the key lock on small imported safes. The last 1/3 of the lock sticks out of the thick safe door where it is attached by a threaded nut. Then a cam is mounted on the back of the plug. It either blocks the boltworks or is used as the handle to open the safe.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

I think you're right. Sounds exactly like what you described. It's full of T pins and every Key pin cylinder has counter-milling.

Cool little lock.
