finally a good find at the Restore...

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

finally a good find at the Restore...

Postby UnlockingBoredom » 16 Jul 2016 20:21

I like to go by the Restore when ever I can to look for things for the house (still need an end table) was looking over the door hardware like I always do (never anything with a lock) and I spotted a box with what looked like 4 schlage locks in it with 2 keys (I did not have my reading glasses with me so I couldnt see crap!) I tried the keys on all 4 but they would only go in 2 of the locks (I was thinking someone put a Kwikset in the schlage housings) The box was labled 6.00 the wife says so I decide to get it. Well it was a bad pain day for me and the guy took pity I guess and gave it to me for $3.00

I get in the truck and get my glasses on and see this, and another one just like it...

Anyone know what keyway these are and it these numbers mean anything like a key cutting code? I dont think I will be able to pick these with my current skill set but would love to make some keys and put them on the front doorknob and deadbolt...

The Medeco looks like a classic 00 keyway which has been out of patent for years so you should be able to have it rekeyed without issue.
The markings on the side of those KIKs would most likely be blind codes for whatever building the locks were installed in.

OK, Picking is out right now.... joints hurt too much!
But I did shim it and take everything out.

I decoded the direction the cuts are and the depth of the key pins but unfortunately I dont have the C jaw for my HPC1200 or the key blanks..

Gordon offered to do the keys and I think its going to work out... :D

another question..... why does it have all the master wafers? is it to make it actually harder to pick because, until you get both the driver pin and wafer picked it wont allow the sidebar to go into the slot?

The master wafers are not there to make it harder to pick they are for a master key(s) to also operate that lock. The key pins still have the job of setting the angle, no matter whether a change key or master key is presented.

If you look in this pic, the sidebar gates on the key pins have been colored purple, you can see the sidebar fingers only go into a small part of the entire vertical distance of the key pins, so if the key pins was shorter and had a master wafer sitting on top of it which does not have a broached sidebar gate in it, it wouldn't matter to the operation of the lock as the sidebar sits low enough in the pin stack that only the bottom of the key pin's broached channel interacts with the sidebar fingers.

hope that helps

Thanks Squelchtone, My brain is in left field right now so its hard to think properly.

I guess I could take them out since I dont really need them (of course getting larger driver pins)

Well I was bored today so I looked up information on Medeco pin sizes (key, master and driver) It looks like my locks are:
Cut 1: 2R
Cut 2: 1C
Cut 3: 1L
Cut 4: 3C
Cut 5: 1R
Cut 6: 3L

At least thats what I get measuring the key pins.

Question.... I am taking it this is a standard Medeco not a Biaxial (?) No false gates.

What is the difference between them? Im not finding information on it that makes sense to my brain.

It's a Medeco Original. It does have false gates, the only difference between it and Biaxial is the angle between the gate and the rotation limiting tab.

Medeco Original and Medeco Biaxial both have false gates in the key pins, they are shallower than the deep grooves in the pins, your lock is Medeco Classic, the photo I linked to is a Medeco Biaxial, which has a lot more to do with the chisel shaped tips of the key pins than gates or anything else. Another difference and an easy way to differentiate the two are the location of the motion stop on the key pins and the groove the motion stop rides in.

The main difference with Biaxial is that the bottom pins had 6 positions not just the Left Center Right. There was also Fore and Aft (beFore and After center of pin I believe) chisel tips for each of the 3 angles and designed for large master keyed systems and to extend the patent.

Ps. Kwoswalt types too fast, and I like his terminology of rotation limiting tab better! :)
