Scorpion CX5 as a cost effective solution vs Medeco

Postby crazy_bee » 17 Oct 2016 20:12

Hi,

I'm not sure if i should post this in the locksmith business thread or here. I talked to a retired locksmith today and It was very interesting. Here is something he told me that he used to do to make better margin of profit: He would put CX5 locks into Blue scorpion Generic Locks housing. IE: deadbolt, knobs and mortises. see http://www.scorpionlocks.com

He told me that he did it for commercial as it was as good a medeco, because the odds of a thief being able to pick them is close to zero. The housing is going to be weaker than a medeco or high security expensive lock but someone with a sledgehammer is going to make it through any of them anyway.

Im wondering if thats considered a cheap thing to do, or something to look for when trying to find better cost alternative for commercial door locks.

Thank you,

David

Almost sounds as though you are trying to get the Scorpion name out there.

Never heard of them but the CX5 in a generic lock is a lower budget way to more security.

It's not like i'm trying to promote the brand, i heard about them for the first time today. I did a search on the forum and found very little info, so i thought it would be an interesting topic. That old locksmith was pretty confident about doing this but to me it didn't seem right to match a good lock in a cheap housing. Better profit yes, but at which cost... Since i am lacking experience i asked about your opinions.

Thanks

Some of the grade 2 import deadbolts are quite robust and adding such a cylinder gives you some added security but more importantly key control. Many people do not need the Medeco and just want key control, so this is a good alternative.

It's a known brand in the lockpicking community, a mix of pin tumbler and Bellock squiggle lock with the feel of an ASSA Twin.

Here's some photos and company details. http://www.lockwiki.com/index.php/Scorpion_CX-5

I remember talking to the factory reps from Canada back in 2007 at a locksmith expo here in Massachusetts. I had a CX5 cutaway once, not sure who I sold or traded it to.

the wiki article reminded me that Marks has had their name stamped on some CX5 cylinders in the last few years as well.

I dont have an opinion to answer your question though about it being a good low cost alternative to something like Medeco.
