List of publicly "unpicked" locks

Postby unjust » 17 Aug 2017 15:36

I was chatting with someone (with no clue about locks) the other day who insisted that most modern locks are unpickable. In pointing them to a host of different picking demos online, I realized that I'm not sure I've seen a formal list of locks that don't have a publicly demonstrated picking or other NDE exploit.

If folks are willing to indulge, I'm thinking a few categories for public/published openings of commercially produced locks/padlocks. I'm intentionally excluding attached hardware past the basic mounting of the core, but including exploits of the padlock mechanism as one so rarely recores a padlock or buys a padlock body separate from a core, and the exploit of the padlock body is usually specific to the model vs all of the variations of door hardware bypass. I'm also intentionally excluding things that someone, even reputable folks, have claimed, but not publicly released.

Unpicked/impressioned - use of tools to manipulate the elements normally operated by the key:
1)

Unbumpable - Use of bumpkey to open (limited to pin tumblers?)
a) disc detainer - excluded as a class
b) wafer locks - excluded as a class
c) lever locks - excluded as a class

Unexploited - use of tools/physics to open/bypass in (usually) non destructive manner (shims, bypass, picking, impressioning, bumping, etc ("usually" NDE recognizing that non-key use can damage a lock, but typically leaves it operational)
i)

I think it's a great idea, but I don't understand the latter part of of the first post. It looks partial/unfinished?

Also, I don't think there's all that much I can contribute to the list but I'm pretty sure that the Bowley remains unpicked. I don't know about a destructive bypass.

The manifoil is maniputable if you know how to do it but they don't offer "public" courses on it. Same with the Mersey lock. One guy I was in contact with said his locksmith friend figured out a way to pick them so he could open old Gov't furniture that had lost keys. Apparently when the British DOD found out they offered him a job. That is why I figured out you might want to figure out a way with them :P

I'm all good for govt jobs thanks. They're welcome to buy stuff from me but I do not and never will work 'for' them.

I knew the Manifoil was able to be manipulated, dependent on the last combo number. I've seen the Mersey picked in front of my eyes but that was certainly not public. :P

How about the Protector? I have only heard 1 rumour and that is totally unconfirmed.

I'm gonna guess the OP is asking about more common locks than something like a Kromer Protector, that's as exotic as it gets.

With Abloy Classic and Profile as well as EVVA MCS being picked in the last year, I would say that changes my mental list of unpicked locks. I know we've all seen Aqua Dio or whatever Abloy Protec laser pick videos, and someone claims it's true, but until a handful of people can independently verify, there will always be someone who says the videos are fake.

How about Fichet 787?

John Falle made a tool for the 787.

well, the intent was to be able to go back and edit the original post, but apparently that got nerfed or i'm remembering wrong.

intent was any lock that is/was in common production - not one offs, but something that was mass/factory produced.

thus far it sounds like just the Kromer Protector?

in terms of "public" i'm not necessarily meaning that the knowledge is widely available, but that the exploit has been publicly documented/accepted.

Some versions of the Kromer Protector have been picked. I don't know if the BP55K has or not.

Yeah, the rumour I heard was an older version. I have looked at 2...the newer one being the BP55K. For what it's worth, I think the newer one would be simpler to pick than the older one due to the ease of tensioning the lock compared with the older one. But that is where the good news ends. It has a vicious post that makes toolmaking a nightmare, it has half huge wafers, half traditional-style levers. Then you get the crazy angular cuts on the key that need to be simulated. I do not think it is impossible and I have not invested a large time into picking one...but , there are some really nasty challenges to overcome.

I can confirm that the old laser-pointer Protec decoder was a real thing, I know the inventor. It only works on Protec 1 and due to the small nature of the tools, it was very fragile.

Protec 2 is certainly pickable but as far as I am aware, there is no public vulnerabilities/exploits for it. I am up to 5 for Protec 2 :D
