By 'best' do you mean the best of the standard door locks? Or high security locks? Wafer, tumbler?
Just need a few more details

best is the brand name... it is the name of the lock... that is the hard part about finding information about them. I can't even find the vendors site.

Uhh, there's a LOT of information about Best locks on this board. Lots of questions are asked about it though, so I can see how it'd be hard to find the information you're looking for.
Best locks are usually SFIC locks, which are only sold in sets to institutions, like schools, hospitals, offices, etc. You'll have a hard time getting your hand on one of those. Best bet is, of course, ebay, and you're already working on that.
You could also just try looking around, try to get lucky. I managed to get a Falcon SFIC lock in a Medeco Keymark padlock body by talking to the nearby school.

I don't think these are retail products, you can't just buy 1 or 2.
I got a bunch on ebay w/ a control key and keys for each core.
Tough to pic but I made a control wrench and can do it if i'm in
the right mood. Mine are 6 pin.
I'd give you 1 but you want a control key or it isn't useful. I cant
make keys or pin the locks, you need special tools for that (many $$$).
If you have no luck getting a core let me know, but I cant give you
a control key.
Best bet (no pun) is prob. ebay.

yah i am looking on ebay now and i will see what i can come up with. I might have to take you up on that offer depending on how i turn out with that. Alos i see that there are BEST key blanks on ebay and maybe you or i could file a control key for that unless i totally misunderstand the control key concept.

I don't have a bests plug sleeve and cylinder in front of me right now, but as I was looking at the site, I started wondering about shimming from the front into the first few pins of the the control sleeve with a really thin shim like one of those found the the little plastic rectangles that catch shoplifers at bestbuy. the antishim lip on the front of the plug must be close to the sleeve shear, if one could shim the first three pins, the control lug would only be a matter of picking the last three or four pins. I have never had this thought before or experimented with it, but I'm just saying, if you found a way to lead the tip of a shim in there.......

I think on some cores that are really worn, it could be an option..... but we are talking reallllllllly worn. You would probably have your best chance with a brass core, as the will wear faster/more. But there is a shoulder you would have to get past, dont know if a shim thin enough to do it would be strong enough to actually use.

The cores I've tried it on, I can't even shim control from the back. It's too tight.

Regarding "Best" style standard cores -
You can't shim from the front unless you break away the face of the core. Doing that does expose the control shear line, but the core is unusable at that point as a functioning cylinder.
"Best" is a brand and a "format" of sorts - commonly referred to as SFIC - for Small Format Interchageable Core". You can also use Arrow, KSP, Falcon, Schlage, Master and a couple of others as test cores to represent the "Best" brand.
Best also manufactures their "premium" cores which use the same size format and use their formerly patented keyways. They are distinctive in that there is a slot down the face of the plug which engages the shoulder on the key blank.
Best also sells "Peaks" cores for patented key control. The face on these is thicker than on standard Best cores and you can tell it's a Peaks core by the little circular hole at the top of the keyway.

There are more profiles than letters of the alphabet. And, there are some profiles that have use more than one letter.
Most of the common profiles are a single letter - A, B, C, etc. Some of the newer profiles are double letter - TA< TB< TC, etc. The Premium profiles are double letter - WA etc. and the Peaks keyways are B1, B2, etc.
The picture appears to have a tension wrench notched to pick the control sleeve, which makes it easier to remove the core from the housing/lock, assuming you can successfully pick it.

Both the wrenches in the picture are for the control sleeve. But in the past few years Ive found it easier to pick the control shearline with a really thick wrench wedged in between the plug wards and the sleeve itself. They will move together if your wrench fits tight enough. Icores arent that bad to pick with a regular wrench, but watch out for oversets.
