How do you determine pins styles?

Postby 1 Armed Bandit » 4 Jun 2005 17:09

How can I determine what kind of pins are in each lock? I can't seem to find any indication of this on a lock I'm currently trying to pick.

But if there is a way, and you guys know it, Id appreciate it if you told me.

Thanks, eh

some people know certain locks have certain pin types in from memory, but when you pick the pins, if they go up a litte bit and get stuck, then you loosen tension and it goes a bit more and that happens a few times, its probably a serrated pin, if it goes up a bit and the plug turns quite a way, then everything locks up and the plug turns back as you lift the pin stack, its probably a spool. if you lift the pin and it goes up then pulls back without slipping forwards first, its probably a mushroom pin. if it just goes up, its probably a normal pin. all in all, these things just take time to learn and recognise, practice makes perfect!

good luck!

Don't mean to be picky (this is a job for a mod and they'll probably pick up on it eventually) but you're sig is a bit too big. I suggest a resize to about 300 x 70, maybe a bit bigger if need be.

yeah, 4 lines is the limit, its in the FAQ's, somewhere.....

its advised to edit it down before a mod catches up with you ;)

The *image* is smaller, but when you add it with the second line and then the line of text it is much too big. The '4 line' sig size rule includes the entire sig, not just any image in it.

Wow, I didn't realize how technical and touchy some people can be regarding a sig pic. I think you guys need to take this convo somewhere else because you guys totally strayed from the subject.

Chrispy, including your quote your sig is .848 inches to my measily .841 inch to claim that mine is 1/3 bigger is simply outrageous, and furthermore.... oh, sorry what was the question again?

Sorry bandit what lock are you working on?
Can you take it apart?

I'm not really sure if I can take it apart but here are some pics, maybe you can tell me how to take it apart if possible.

Rules are rules. Your sig is too big.

Back on topic: generally, that kind of lock isn't made to be taken apart or rekeyed. Unlock it, and look in the hole where the shackle goes. If there's a hex screw, unscrew it, and the cylinder will come out; if there isn't a screw, tough luck. If you really want to see the insides of it, you'll have to cut it apart.

That lock probably doesn't have security pins in it, from the looks of it. Do you have the maker name and model number? If so, you can find information on it on the web.
