spools?

Postby Cellardoor » 15 Jun 2005 0:05

hey guys,

i posted the other day about having trouble with a master lock wich i managed to pop 2 or 3 times, but im still having some issues getting it consistantly. some one in that previouse post mentioned that the lock had "spools" im not to sure what they are, i have looked over posts, and other lock picking literature to no avail. can some one point me to a previouse thread or fill me in? thanks!

If you were unable to find anything you need to work on your searching skills.

Spool pins are a type of security pin which give you false feedback. They are called spools because they are shaped kind of like an empty spool of thread.

As for defeating them:
viewtopic.php?t=7956&highlight=spool+pins

"When you get to the hard stop on the plug, ease off the tension slightly and repick the pins. One which tries to force the plug in the opposite direction to the tension wrench, will be a spool. Expect to find more than one. When the false set spool sets correctly, don't be surprised that other pins will unset. Your task is to find the setting order whilst correctly setting these spool pins. Once you know where they are, the task is a lot easier."

Spool and Mushroom Pins
Picking locks with spool and mushroom pins takes practice, both to recognize them and to effectively neutralize them when they are encountered. The first sign of spool and mushroom pins is that the lock will appear to be picked, but will only turn a few degrees. See Figure 6 for an example of a spool pin...

You can find the rest here under "exercise 10" they also include an image of a spool pin: http://www.crypto.com/papers/notes/picking/
