i just bought a new master lock(cost about $ 7) from my local wal-mart and suprisingly im haveing a bit of trouble with it... i have picked several masterlocks before but this one hates me or somthing.

now this is what proves me a true blue idiot : i threw away the packaging
and i now i dont know what model it is i was hoping that mabe one of you out there could help me by telling me if master lock uses and special pins or anything like that on a cheap lock like this and if not then why am i haveing so much trouble with this lock ( i have picked it sucsessfully twice but now every time i try i get nothing)

They do on some models, even cheap ones. I dont think they use
spools on any of the laminated locks but they do on most of the
full size brass ones like the 140.

Have a gander in here Lockpunk. When you find the lock, post what model it is. I'm sure someone will be able to help you out.

I would check the new lock to make sure it operates easily with the key. It may be just slightly defective and kinda tempermental, which makes picking harder. More likely, however, compare the keys of the easy-to-pick and hard-to-pick locks. Keys with less variations on the key cuts (that is, it looks more like small hills than the rocky mountains) are easier to pick/rake. Just recently, in fact, I purchased another Master Platinum with smaller 'bumps' on the keys because my other Master Platinum was kicking my backside (I am not the greatest picker) and I needed one that was a little easier. I picked the new one within 10 minutes of opening the package. That is the difference the key cuts can make.

If you have the means, post a small picture of the lock with the key beside it. With this information, we can usually tell you what the lock is and why you may be having problems with it.

Are you quite sure that it's a MASTER brand padlock? It's not just some no-name generic Wal-Mart lock?

That means it is not a master lock, but a different brand or similar knockoff of a master lock.
Master locks are made in Milwaukee...somewhere in the states.

laminated padlocks

Postby raimundo » 4 Jul 2005 8:12

laminated padlocks of the made in china brand sometimes have a few spool pins in them, so try light picking with allowance for any reversing of the plug, and if if the ky lube gets sticky, switch to mazola :)
