Toolbox lock

Postby vector40 » 15 Aug 2005 20:15

I think the wafer lock on this Husky toolbox might have a sidebar -.- I can't set anything at all.

Anyone ever encountered anything like that?

There are such things as sidebar wafer locks--but I don't think they'd be on a Husky toolbox. Edit: a picture would be helpful, as the previous poster said.

Some wafer locks, (Illinois brand) are really tough. Especially the ones that use double sided keys.

It's single-sided. I'm just baffled. The reason I was curious is because the wafers look odd to me.

Here's a picture. http://berkeleyhigh.org/provinggrounds/huskywafer.jpg

That sort of funny notching is in the other wafers, too... though most of them seem to be notched on the other side. Odd.

Again, I can't seem to set anything, no matter which way I turn it.

The 'notches' are usually for either a master key or a core removal key.

How many wafers are there? The last wafer may actually be a retaining wafer and not a true wafer.

While the key may be single sided, the wafers lock into both sides of the core. Wafer locks like this are good candidates for impressioning.

There appear to be some numbers on it.

If so, go to a locksmith with an ITL9000 and ask for a code cut.

Or send me the numbers, and I'll upload a photo of the key.

Be advised, the code cuts don't always work.

Oh, I'm not looking for a key... I'm sure we have it around here somewhere. I'm just curious about the mechanism.

Postby raimundo » 17 Aug 2005 8:55

I just bet that it would pick really fast, like they usually do. have you tried?

yep, you can pick that with just a tension wrench. My file cabinet at work was locked the other day, and they lost the key. Took one look, and opened it with a tension wrench. Or you could just use the ball pick, or even the half snowman.

fixer is right. The weird wafers are for either a master key, a core removal key or both. One type of key has the blade on the left and uses one side of the wafer, the other key has the blade on the right and uses the opposite side of the wafer.

None of these set. None of these even bind. I have no idea what's up with this lock. Maybe it's broken.

they are not going to bind or set because they're are not pins. Wafers are discs with holes in them.

Here are two pictures I took of a wafer lock core.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b331/ ... G_0768.jpg - sorry for the blurryness

I will take a picture of the wafers outside the plug tomorrow.
