ID a Master Lock for me....laminated steel with yellow band

Postby pickit » 6 Sep 2005 19:00

I came across a Master laminated steel padlock (large one) that had a yellow plastic band around the bottom instead of the normal blue one. A quick scan of Master's website did not reveal anything similar. Does anyone know anything about these locks? Seemed to be just like a real large #3. Thanks for any info!

I think the yellow band is the "Commercial" or "Contractor" grade I forget which one.

Which, could mean that it has harder components and better machining.

I think the ones that say "Commercial" on them have a grey band around the top and bottom.
Knowing Master, it doesn't have better components or better machining, just a fancy "commercial" tag on it

The Master website sure seems cruddy. Master makes a lot of locks that they dont list on the website...or at least I have not found the right combo of clicks to find them.

Speaking about the "commercial" locks, I have a master "commercial' No.1 lock that has a band around the top and one around the bottom...the one around the top says "COMMERCIAL" and the lower band says "Master". So easy to pick sometimes it just opens if you give it a dirty look ;-) I swear all the pins in it must be the same length...the only tough part is it has a hour glass shape that blocks the cylinder..otherwise its the easiest lock I have ever picked.

Thats the one...the one I saw was just larger.

Anything different about these locks other then the yellow band?

edit: After getting the part #'s from the masterlock images site I searched the main master site and found out the info I was looking for....looks like its just a 5 pic master...with a snazzy yellow 'bumper'.

Commercial in master lock terms means that there is some kind of system for keying it to a system. not sure how this works, I got that from a hardware clerk, the locks seem to have a loose cylinder in them when they are new in the box.

'Commercial' means absoloutely nothing. as far as I am concerned master is a disgrace to the lock industry. High security, never. I have seen no.1 with yellow band but the most common I see are no.5
