Head down to your local cheap shop or hardware store and buy a simple, cheap deadbolt. All you need out of it is the cylinder (the lock part). Take the chamber cap off (the metal that covers the tops of the chambers) or (don't know how much you know about locks...) you could use a plug follower and take out the plug. Basically what you want to do is remove some pins (and driver pins and springs) out of a couple of chambers and practice picking with two pins, then add one and try three pins, and so on and so on. This is the best way to learn.
