BEST combination locks

Postby vector40 » 11 Sep 2005 18:49

A friend just asked me about a lock he ran into that, he swears, was BEST brand name and -- though it took a secondary key -- was a Simplex-style pushbutton combination lock. (This was on a door.)

My guess is that the BEST was just a secondary bypass for the handleset itself, and the buttonpad was a third-party. As an odd quirk, this wasn't the Simplex type where you press the buttons and they add the combination transparently; it's the sort where the buttons stay in until you finish the combination or reset it. In this case, pressing down the handle reset whatever you've entered.

Anyone seen something like this on a door? I've only heard of them on things like key boxes and the like.

Well, at the local Commercial office of the telephone company, they use a similar system, but I never saw any best locks coupled with it.

However, they made mistakes with the security in the keypad system. On the top, you can insert a special screw driver into one of those 2 dimple screws and bypass the lock... not very secure for something as big as a telephone company.

More data: Entering a number then pressing the handle all the way down pops the entered numbers out, but pressing the handle only partway pops the numbers one at a time -- though the order varies.

Dunno how you'd manipulate one of these without being able to apply tension.

Got a picture. http://scienceprod.com/mysteriousdoor.jpg

It SURE looks like a normal Simplex to me, but that's not the behavior described. Anyone familiar with 'em?

That is a KABA Ilco Unican mdl L1021 With a best core for the bypass.

Push the handle down to clear the lock , pushing the correct sequence of numbers and pressing the handle down will open the lock.

I have to check but I think you can have up to 4 sequences (each "push" can have up to 2 numbers ),

They are often found in high traffic areas such as banks to let the tellers behind the counter or other areas they just want traffic control.
Not really known for High Security areas as they can be "shoulder Surfed" fairly easily.

Has pics, prices, ect If you look under mdl 1000 there is an installler
PDF which contains information on how to chage the combo, including how to find or reset lost combo

Much thanks, keysman.

Are you aware of any working manipulation for these?

manipulate?
I remember seeing away to mainipulate these , but It was just a organised brute force attack ie just eliminate all the possibilitys.

Not very practical or quick.

You can eliminate a lot of the buttons by looking for wear spots, that may give some indication of what buttons are used.

Check out some of the hacker/ spy sites . Some have a pretty effective way to eliminate most combos, but not a true manipulation. More like a game cheat.

The only thing I'm aware of on these locks is the number of installers who don't change the default combination.
