Can't remove abloy key.

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Can't remove abloy key.

Postby Heliox » 12 Sep 2005 12:06

I've got an abloy (classic?) cam lock that's about 2" long. I've inserted the key to unlock it then tried to unlock it, but the key won't turn all the way back and thus cannot be removed. Any ideas on how to extract the key without destroying the lock? It's expendable as a training lock, but I'd prefer to dismantle it in a more gentle manner.

Which brings up the next question. I see what appears to be a retaining ring on the back, but I can't figure out how to get it off to remove the core. There do not appear to be any set screws on this as there do on the vending machine versions, only the weird ring on the back.

Abloy cam lock

The tail piece+ stop+ cam nut need to be fairly tight, or the cylinder "jumps " the correct timming.

Just tighten every thing up and you should be good to go

Nope, that's not it. and if i remove the nut and spin the lock about 10 times, it stops rotating until i jiggle the key a bit.I think that a disk has somehow attached to the key in a way that prevents it from being removed. If I put the nut back on and crank it down,

Can anyone tell me how to disassemble the lock with the key still in it? It's not installed in anything so i have access to the entire exterior of the lock, just not inside the keyway.

snap ring

Postby raimundo » 12 Sep 2005 20:27

does the internal snap ring on the rear of the cylinder have a rectangular notch in it, if so, try to get a tool to fit in the notch and see if you can ramp it out by turning it around the core, if this comes out, you will be able to remove the core and sidebar from the back of the lock, and the stuck key will keep the discs and spacers. take these out very carefully, I recommend marking them with a marker, as the sequence and the top bottom orientation of these will be important to reassembly. marking them would be the easy solution if you mark them in a consistant way.

Yep. That was it. I had been trying to get that out the wrong way. I got the lock dismantled and after about 15 minutes had it back together and working with the new key. The issue was that I had taken the stop off of the back of the cylinder and wasn't finding the hull notch for the locking bar. Nifty piece of engineering. I'm not sure I understand how you can actually impression them, but it's quite a mechanism.
