hi guys,
what do you guys use to remove and refit these locks i have been using mole grips but every time i do one of these jobs the mole grips make a slight mess around the cylinder caused by grips slipping, any ideas?
thanx

Fingers.
Failing that use something to protect the finish such as rubber or pvc tape.
Loosen the lockcase screws before removing the cylinder.

What your after is a strap wrench. Get the ones that have the black rubber strap, rather than the nylon strap ones, or the chain ones sold by Vise-Grip.

These are totally non-marring.

Get one of those grips for old people with a weak grip, its like a handle with an adjustable rubber grip for loosening lids on jars etc. Look on this site for the strongboy bottle opener http://www.essentialaids.com/

Good luck finding a Dollar Store these days... The ones around here are closing up 'cause the price of gas. I guess you can't sell stuff for a $1.20 in a dollar store.

al,
is there a reason that you loosen the lockcase screws before unscrewing the cylinder?

Badly fitted locks, very common in Ally doors. A five minute job can easily turn to half hour. If you loosen the screws every time you know it isn't binding and less likely to cross thread the new one. In wooden doors you may have to give the case a shake if it is a tight fit and badly aligned.

you should never cross thread anything
if it does not go smooth run a tap through

if the cross drill was done incorrectly at instalattion originally

rasp it out.

Its not easy to cross thread a mortise cyl

you gotta work at it
