Tower of London locks

Postby greyman » 19 Sep 2005 5:01

A question for those of you who have visited the vault at the Tower of London (where the Crown Jewels are kept):

Does anyone know what locks are used on the vault?

My observations, from a visit a couple of years back, is that there are two locks of the same make. Both are lever locks with a double-bitted key. My guess is Rosengrens Tann (see here for a picture http://www.rosengrens.com/NR/exeres/5DEC47F0-1173-424A-BF8E-5B2FF32A2379.htm), although they may also be Kromer Protector. Anyone have more info?

(No I'm not planning to heist the Crown Jewels! :) )

The doors are Rosengrens - Tann, I recall when they won the contract over Chubb.

The visitors doors lock from the inside - and I don't recall seeing any locks, just the handles. However if there are keylocks given the period they would be ABN (unless retrofitted). The door that the staff use is elsewhere and I would guess at combination locks, probably electronic with timelocks.

Stealing is bad.... but it would make for a great movie! :P You could call it "Greyman's Dozen" or "National Treasure"... oh wait.. that might not work.

It was already done, back in the sixties. Just can't remember the name of the film.

Rosegren is a very good manufacturer of locks, but John Falle probably has some bypass tool for it

Now you got me thinking about that show "Heist"....
