For y'alls amusement:

Alright alright, so it's not a big deal for many of you, but as a working locksmith I'm quite pleased with myself.

Why, you may ask?

Today, November 3rd, at approximately 3:09p.m. MST I opened my first lock with a hair pin.

Yes, that is right, an actual hairpin. Using the back of one of Ray's famous bogota's as a tension wrench, I opened up and inserted one of my wife's (looks over shoulder to make sure she's not watching) hair clip/pin things into the 40mm Brico padlock. A couple of light rakes and the shackle popped open.

I think this is actually my first time using a non-intended item as an actual lock pick (yes, I specified 'cause I've made lots of my own tension tools)....kinda sad really....

...probably even more sad that I'm actually proud of this....

..not to mention rather pathetic that I'd have the nerve to actually post about it on here, but what the hey...

I guess I should get to shaping those dental tools I scrounged from the dentist yesterday.

Oh well...hope you nOOb's find this inspirational.

Ah, Ray's Bogota was involved though. I'd be very impressed if you'd also made a tension wrench out of the hair pin. :D

Kudos though, you picked it with a hair pin. I have yet to try that...

I just KNEW some day soon you'd pop your first lock.

..Feels good, doesn't it, Varj?

Now you just need to get some hacksaw blades and
do a search for Pyro's video

Now, Varjeal, you HAVE opened a bathroom doorknob lock with a paper clip/screwdriver/whatever, so you're not counting that right? I'm talking about those doorknobs where the 'key' is just basically a little metal rod with a flat tip.

I remember being overjoyed when I was a little kid, 5 or 6, and I figured out how to pop those with a paper clip--NOBODY had any privacy after that  ; it didn't matter if you were taking a crap or what, if that door was locked then out came the paper clip and little devildog was in like Flint (usually with a Polaroid camera in hand)!

I got you all beat. I once picked a Kwikset with nothing but a Peterson Gem, and a tension wrench. With BOTH eyes closed.

I thought we all started with paperclips? They are perfect for cheap wafer locks.

I've improv'd a pick out of many things. Paperclips, safety pins, wire, plastic coffee stirrers, shims, in fact, pretty much anything vaguely useable.

Of course, now I take a set of proper picks everywhere, letting me deal with most lock-out calls from my belt and jacket!
