Paddlock shims

Postby JimmyD » 16 Nov 2005 1:20

:o I've bought these spring steel shims they are suppost to slip between the hasp and the shackel retainer and pop it open, but it seems that it ain't that easy to get the shim in place any ideas ?
New to lock picking interested in the technical side as a hoby only, (As Im always losing keys)

try pusinging the shackel to one side befor inserting the shim; i found that sometimes the gap isnt quite big enough to fit a shim right off the bat. Also, I know some newer locks are resistant to shims.

If you bought commercial shims you may need to rape the shim around the lock shackle and lightly bend it to the shape of that shackle. Then wiggle the shim on the side of the shackle just be for the locking pin,or just nicking the edge of the lock pin, then turn it to the center of the lock with a slight up and down and back and forth. If that does not work try putting the shim on the other side of the shackle, you want the tip of that shim to get under locking pin, some locks require two shim, and a good tap to open it up.

you may need to rape the shim

No thanks, they have really sharp edges!!!

Anyway, I do agree with Auto45 about bending the shim. I found they work better and last longer if you shape them like a "U" rather then the "L" shape they come in (looking down from the top of course)

I have gotten quite good at using shims. The best way to make them work is to first of all bend the shim into a "U" shape that fits the coutour of the lock. Like many have already said. Then when insering the shim in the proper way. You should move the bar up the down kinds "jiggle it" slowly while pushing the shim down and sort of twisting it side to side. If this doesn't work you can file the shim so that it is thinner but use a light file that won't make too rough of an edge because this will just make more friction when insering the shim. Just be patient and get a feel for the lock. When you move it one way and feel it going in keep going in that direction. Just work it is and when you get it in pull down on the shim while jiggling the lock downwards. This always has worked for me. Good luck to you friend. If you have any knowledge to share. Please share it with me. I can always use a few pointers.

shimin'

Postby raimundo » 17 Nov 2005 10:37

Many padlocks have two locking dogs, one of them is beveled to be pushed back by the shackle as the lock is closed, and the other is not beveled since the shackle holds it open on the side that remains in the lock. other locks use a ball bearing type of locking dog, and this cannot be shimmed.
I am quite surprised that all you shimin' experts didn't ask the obvious first question, what kind of lock are you trying to shim?

You know on i-hacked it shows you after he cuts out the shape on paper and its like a M but with longer | | is the reason it says to bend them so its just M so you kinda have thick handles to grasp.
