Are key blanks available anywhere for old warded padlocks?

Postby DUKE » 1 Dec 2005 19:48

I'm talking fairly old, and a single-sided ward. There is one key with the lock, but It would be great to find a source for a couple of blanks to make backups from.

These are a couple of pictures I found of the same model:

Anyone have a source?

Those are lever locks, bro.

If it's in Ilco still (questionable) these guys might have it... http://www.bluedogkeys.com/

But... he's new, and he posted pictures in his first post, and asked a complete question. I say he gets bonus points for that.

Duke, welcome to the site! :D

Thanks for the props. I didn't find vector40's answer rude, though. I guess it helps that I've actually been reading the forums for a bit.

I'll have to look into the difference between warded and lever locks. They just looked kind of the same from the outside, and I've only played with manipulating pin tumblers and wafers so far.

Thanks for the website link. Good resource. I didn't see exactly what I needed, but I'll contact them and ask.

Thanks for all the info you folks have already posted around here. I'm learning daily.

It is hard to tell the difference; I often can't. But the series of clean vertical cuts with even spacing and no other weirdness definitely suggests levers.

Would it perhaps be possible to grind/file new keys from hacksaw blades or similar, since the keys are nothing complicated and are not thickness dependant, it should be easy. I admit they would look rather uglly and flimsy compared to the real key, but they should work.

That's a really cool lock. A master lever lock with curtain. The keyway looks familiar too.

Those aren't my locks, unfortunately. The photos I posted above were nicked from elsewhere on the web. The top one belongs to Jerry Clausen. He's got a beautiful collection posted at: http://members.aol.com/pdx2001/padlocks/iron.htm.

The bottom one is from a listing that is currently still up on $Bay. Search for "vintage Master lock" and look in the stores section at the bottom. Of course, that one looks like someone tried to open it with a hammer at one point.

Even the lock I originally asked about isn't mine. A friend bought it through another auction recently for under nine bucks, and it works pretty smooth. It would be nice if I could find some actual years of manufacture for it.

@jellywerker: I already did hold it up to a hacksaw blade, and it's wide enough material to make a replica of the key blade, but there's not enough material to match the full key width or bang in a groove to make it a comfortably working key. That's what he's really after.

Say... and Jerry even had the above page labelled as lever locks if I had bothered to read it properly.
