Best Locks

Postby chihonky » 11 Dec 2005 18:33

Hi does anyone out there have written instructions on how to repin a best core. If so I would appreciate a copy of it , or perhaps a web site I can go to.

Thanks
Chi

This will require special tools to recap the cylinder. Do you have the proper tools to do this?
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Theese are pretty difficult to re key for the inexperienced. If you want it re keyed go to a locksmith or just buy another core. If you are still interested Crypto.com has a white paper on BEST locks.

Matt Blaze has some excellent photographs of decoder tool and punch tool used to dump the pins in a Best I/C core. You can visit the URL directly by clicking HERE.

Although I'm not very familar with the process myself, you might try asking grit1 what kind of equipment investment is needed in order to start re-keying I/C cores correctly. I know he's been spending a good deal of time and money on these systems in the past few weeks.

As far as instructions go, you MAY find a kind local locksmith who may go over with the tools and process necessary to do it, although it's somewhat unlikely as they would be potentially losing business were they to do so.

I would go with quickpick's advice though. Usually the investment needed is too high. The few times I needed an I/C rekeyed I just took it to my local lockie and he was able to do it for a very reasonable price.

I did some looking and I found a good example of a tool that you may need to work with I/C's from Best or Falcon...

Thats the ticket - you couple this with some caps to pound down and a pinning kit and you should be set for small volume re-keying. If you get into doing it for a living they have systems with presses similar to regular arbour presses, with special core holding fixtures and strips of caps to make things go faster. There's auctions on E-bay all the time as well for "uncombinated" cores ready for pinning. ~Grit.
