general question on lock manufacturing

Hi

A typical BS lock (profit for example) has over a thousand key differs. Not uncommon of course. But do the manufacturers actually produce every single differ in their production runs of a particular lock. Or do they tend to make only 30, 50, 100 or 200 etc different locks, to save on production/assembly line costs? Any particular brand more likely to 'skimp' on differs than any other brand?

The requirements of the British Standard is that after a particular pattern of key is made, 999 other (different) patterns need to be produced before that 1st key may be reproduced.

I know I used to get the feeling that I was seeing the same keys on a number of occasions though ........

But in theory the manufacturer could make a million at pattern one and have no need to make patten two, unless he sells a million pattern ones of course. Naturally i know that doesnt happen like that, but is there any requirement to make all the 1000 combinations? How many of each differ are typically made before going to the next?

No, as I said only 1 may be made (unless sets specially ordered to pass the same key - 6 maximum) and then 999 others have to be made before that pattern may be reproduced.

Someone told me the new ERA fortress is made in China, does it conform to british standards when its made abroad!!

Must be why they spray the fortress red now. Up with communism!!!

I can imagine a guy with a rifel at his head checking every 1000 locks!!
