Where do I go from here?

Postby X Aggressive » 16 Feb 2004 13:14

I've been picking for several months now, and can open most any standard blue and silver masterlock. I have trouble with the bronze weather resistant masters, they have rounded pins, I believe. I can open ACE pin tumbler locks (the ones with the one spool pin) but again, when they do open - it feels like luck.

I've never opened a doorknob lock, but I haven't attempted them so much.

Is there a lock brand a step up from Master? Or where would you go from here if you were me?

Do you rake or pick? When you are picking, do you know at least approximatively which pins are set and which are not?

If you still have trouble with the weather resistant Masters, do those. Also I'd get yourself a Kwikset. It won't be very hard, but I've always considered it a baby step up from a master.

I use the half hook always. No raking - just picking.

About how much does a kwick set cost?

No matter how hard I try, I just can't get the weather resistant bronze masters consistently. Maybe once every 3-5 minutes, but I have some gold and blue standard masterlocks down in about 5-10 seconds... is that even possible with the bronze masters?

Thanks for all the advice and any to come.

Kwikset, spelled like that. And I believe, around me, you can get a deadbolt for less than $10 or $15. I've never bought one new, only looked, so I might be wrong.

And yes, it's certainly possible with the bronze masters. I actually find them a little easier. Sounds like you're trying too hard. Just relax, you'll get it.

Alright, I'll move onto to the kwikset deadbolt.

Are you sure we're talking about the same locks? I know there are the bronze regular ones, but I'm talking about the really slim bronze ones.. as shown here:

Solid Bronze!

Thanks for all the advice.

another idea is to look at the formation of the key cuts through the package...if you want a little more of a challenge make sure you get something that goes very high to very low and so forth...you can also do this by repinning the kwickset if you buy it with a fairly simple pin kit...enjoy

The padlocks you are refering to in the link are actually solid brass ones, and have spool pins in the top of the stack. May I suggest that you hold off from attempting these yet.

If you want something a bit trickier, you could reconfigure your layered Master's high low, as Red suggested.

Check out:

for more info. There is also a tutorial on dismantling the Brass Master padlocks.

HTH.
