Medeco Key Card Decoding

Postby searsman05 » 26 Jan 2006 3:15

Ok now i am not sure if this can be in the public forums so if it cant be i am sorry for asking.
Anyway what i was wondering is i have some medeco cylinders that i would like to repin. i have keys for them now but no cards to get extra keys made. Now the question is, if i have a keycard and keys with the key code on the card how can i decode it so i know what pins to use? i guess i could just do it pin by pin but that would take ages and it would be so much easier if i could just decode them.
If anybody knows where i can find some info on how to do this. Or if you can explain it to me that would be a great help.

thanks for the help/info

Are you talking about original technology or biaxial?

I would guess Biaxial, since that what searsman05 seems to be dealing with...

Actually, I too would be fairly interested in this.

Well, lets say you have this medeco code for a 5-pin biaxial lock:

2M 1Q 4B 5D 3K

The number in each segment refers to the cut depth, and the letter will tell if the cut is a fore or aft cut, and if the angle is Left, Right or Center. Use the chart below to decode the above code. You can see from the chart below that 2M decodes to a number 2 depth cut, in the aft postion so it is .031 after the center position and it is a left hand cut. Cuts on a medeco biaxial key starts at .244 and spacing is .170. But dont forget that each cut is before or after center line, so you will have to add or subtract .031 to each center line spacing.

2M = 2 depth cut, After Center line (.244+.031=.275), Left Cut
1Q = 1 depth cut, Before Center line (.414-.031=.383), Right Cut
4B = 4 depth cut, Before Center line (.584-.031=.553), Center Cut
5D = 5 depth cut, After Center line (.754+.031=.785), Center Cut
3K = 3 depth cut, Before Center line (.924-.031=.893), Left Cut

And of course you can always work backwards using the chart and your biaxial medeco key. You find your cut depth and fore or aft position by measuring the key with calipers or with the key decoding tool from medeco. And if you hold the key bow with the key blade facing away from you, place an imaginary ball in each cut, and if the ball rolls to the right, it is a right cut, and if it rolls to the left, it is a left cut, and if it doesn't roll, than it is a center cut. From the information you gathered and the chart below you can determine that a #2 Left cut in the aft position is a 2M pin.

I believe cut depths for medeco biaxial keys are:

1 = .272
2 = .247
3 = .222
4 = .197
5 = .172
6 = .147

Great thank you for your help. Now, i read through and sorta kinda understand what you are talking about but the keycode on my card looks nothing like that.

Ok i dont wanna post my keycode so i will use an x for numbers and a z for letters

My card shows xz xxxxzzz

how would you decode this if there is not a letter after every number>

They are Biaxial keys and it is 6 pin.

Now i thought maybe it just had a few normal(non angled cuts) where there where just numbers but the first cut is angled and the second cut is not but then the third cut is angled again. So i am lost.

I hope some of that makes sence

thanks again for the help

You won't be able to extract a working key bitting from your card. It has what is called a Indirect Code, which mean it needs to be translated into the bitting before a working key can be cut. There is only 2 ways to do this. Contact Medeco, or Contact a Locksmith who services that type of lock. The Locksmith, depending on the lock, can either look the code up in a book, or swipe your card through a reader connected to Medeco directly. From that, Medeco instantly sends him the direct code (bitting) and he can cut the key. Medeco most likely will not send you a direct code if you contact them directly.

Now...

It is truly not difficult to repin by just looking at the key. I don't know if you have pins, but they may help :wink: . Look at the top of the key so that the tip is pointed foward and the blade is looking up. If you were to drop a ball bearing onto the cut, which way would it roll off. If it rolls to the left it is a left cut, right to the right, so on and so forth. Now that you know what direction, Take the key and put it into the empty plug and start at pin opening one. Look down the hole to the cut and see if the cut itself is at the bottom or top of the hole. If it is at the top, it is a aft, if it at the bottom, it is a fore. Now all you need is the depth and that is easy. After determining 1 or 2 pins, it will come natural to you.

Hope the above makes sense. 01:39 in the morning and my eyes won't shut, but my brain is ready for bed. If that even makes sense.

Thanks for that info. I know how to look at the key and see the fore and aft cuts and all that I just thought maybe there was some way to decode that number on the card. I will either contact my local medeco dealer and see what he can do but he is not the most friendly guy so maybe i will just do the old look at the key and pin the lock method I guess. The main reason I wanted to get the key codes is because I do not have a medeco K-5002 or whatever pin kit at the moment and I didnt wanna buy one use like 12 pins and let it sit. I know someone with a kit that may let me have some pins from it, so i was just gonna send him a email and let em know what pins I needed so he could just send em over to me. If anybody here can decode a card and would sell me just some pins that would be so great:D The guy i know may or may not wanna spare some pins i just never know with that guy lol.

Anyway thanks for the info and if you got pins lemme know i might end up needing some :D

I have a web based program I can use to translate your code card numbers to the actual cut depths for the keys if anyone needs it. You can contact me via PM here or dennis (at) bayarealocks.com - Thanks.
