It appears to be a chubb ava. This is a very nice lock and it is very hard to pick without the proper tools. The operation of this lock is very similar to the Miracle locks. I envy you now that I know you have one 8) .

Definitely a Chubb AVA padlock, the mechanism being possibly as common in the UK now used in the Chubb 4L67 BS 3621 rim nightlatch (previously 4L66).

As Zeke 79 said, it's a very difficult pick and to me and would be an absolute nightmare if I came across a lock mech such as this in the UK to open at the door. I also envy you in that you've got one :)

Jason, I admire and understand your enthusiasm for lockpicking and your will to make McGyver tools, but honestly, in the meantime, try something a bit less difficult. Your sense of achievements in picking, if you take things step by step will be far more rewarding for you in the long term. 8)

What makes this lock so hard to pick? does it have pins, wafers, levers, or what?

The AVA mechanism is a high security 10 disk mechanism lock. One of the padlocks using such mechanisms is the Chubb 1K42.

It is also used on the Chubb 4L66/67 rim nightlatches as I mentioned earlier.

Picking of this lock and methods of picking this lock should only be discussed in the Advanced forums. Sorry Jason.
