Hello All,
I have been reading this site for a long time and even joined once but had nothing to say so forgot my details.
Sorry moderators, I am not trying to break the rules by joining again.
I have been interested in locks since I read an article on escapology when I was about 8 years old. We learned to read early in those far off days.
Since then my interest has grown but most of my early knowledge was gained from books and so I now have a fairly large collection. I also have quite a lot of locks of many sorts, too many keys to count, and a wide range of tools. You may have guessed that I suffer from a collecting habit
I find the site fascinating and frequently informative but I wonder if some members make posts in order to boost numbers.
I doubt that I will post enough to get to the advanced level but it seems to me that there is so much information available outside the forum that much of the advanced stuff (judgeing by some of the references in other posts) is already in the public domain anyway.
Hope I have not trodden on anyones toes as I think the site should be given every encouragement.
If you can't take a joke you shouldn't have joined

Hey

Hey all,

Great site!

I've recently developed an interest in lock picking and I am looking to get my first set of tools next week.

I have a few questions, Sorry if this is the wrong section to ask them:

I tried my first lock today; a yale padlock and I got very excited when I picked it 3 times in 10 mins with just 2 thin bits of metal which I snapped off something I found in the shed. I used 1 for the tension and picked with the other. I was just poking and prodding so it's no great achievement, I know - but it still felt good.

Anyhow, after getting all excited (sad, I know lol) - I kept trying... after that 3rd time I have not been able to get it open since. I know I should wait for the tools but I just had to have a go.

My questions are:

I dont really understand the binding pin is, what is it and what does it do? how do you know if you have found it? and do you need to find the binding pin before setting the rest?

I have included a photo of the lock just so you guys know what I'm working with.

Thanks in advance for the help and again sorry if I wasn't meant to ask in this section. Feel free to delete.

Hey thats a yale of course as says on the body :D

I think all Yales contain the spool pin.

It's the only padlock iv'e seen that the plug is on the very side and not the center :)

But thanks alot for your reply. Just getting into all this so all information is appreciated.

Thanks

That yale has to have 2 spools Practise on a lock that has none, But read the M.I.T guide and you will be picking that yale in no time

Ive picked alot of 5 pin tumbler padlocks with no Spools but i just like the sizes.

With spools iv'e picked a 6 pin Euro cylinder 2 spools.

This sunday and i go on hoildays 8) then when im home i'll pick the locks i got in L.A and ask information on it and post pictures

Going to have to read up alot at the min tried 2 locks and can open them both but to be honest its just luck poke prode and its open but don't really know how I'm doing it.

Got the tension bit sussed but am lost when it comes to binding pins ect :-S lol

pick guns

Postby brian_cusick » 29 Mar 2006 17:48

hi , to all of you lot out there who make lock picking sound so easy... i take my hat of to you , as a carpenter ive been fitting locks for 15yrs now and i am only just starting to learn the locksmith trade . sick and tired of drilling locks for my boss i want to learn non distuctive methods. i know the basics but want to know so much more. http:/www.youtube.com/watch?v=WexoP5ZDWgg this is a clip of me bumping a lock with a home made key i am very pleased with myself on my first attempt.

i am on the verge of buying a pick gun but i dont know which to purchase.
manual gun or electric?? or wether or not it will be worth it as i am just starting out on my picking adventure. any advice would be gratefully recieved cheers bc

Hey and welcome everyone.

Great video brian_cusick, jeesh it took a long time to load but was well worth it. It was very well edited, you should submit it to the Video thread, search for it.

I would reccommend also getting a small set, theres times when you will not be able to pick a lock with a gun and you will be very happy to have that set just in case. As for a pick gun, I would suggest using the site http://www.lockpickshop.com. Use the code 'lp101' at the checkout page and recieve 10% off! I woulf also definetly say that you would be better off with a mechanical gun and getting good practice before you move onto the electric, it takes a bit of practice, but you be happier in the end. I just ordered this gun in a combo set and I would suggest it http://www.lockpickshop.com/p-LAT-17.html. Its not the best out there, but its cheap, and it does get the job done.

I wish you the best of luck and again, Welcome everyone, I hope you enjoy this site as much as I do.

Cheers,

Treeson
