Shmoocon LP talk video available

Postby RenderMan » 1 Apr 2006 19:39

The shmoo have finally got the talks online including Deviant and I's lockpicking talk.

http://www.shmoocon.org/movie/Ollam-Lockpicking.mp4

We cover a little of everything and even cover a little about safes. You also get to see me crack a safe live on-stage which I've never attempted before.

It's a decent presentation and definatly recommended to attend if we give it at Hope or Defcon.

I downloaded it twice last night and each time just got a black screen and it refused to play, anyone else had the same problems?

Same with me. Windows Media player and Nero Showtime both give error messages. Oh well...

Yes ..... I also am having a hard time playing the file.

It worked once with QuickTime player, but only the one time.

Seems that the it needs a newer or more stable codec than I have, in order to play it reliably.

What I did see looked very good though.

It now plays nicely in Windows Media Player

FYI that clip is

Mime Type: video/mp4

File Type: 3GPP Media (.3GP) [MP4 compat.]

This free codec will enable windows media player to play .gp3 and other
stuff smoothly

There are plans for a lockpick 'village' at HOPE 6 much like what has been seen at CCC and other european conferences.

Myself and Deviant will be onhand for basics and Barry *might* be around for the more advanced stuff. All very tentative and unconfirmed, but that's what we're trying to setup.

As for the video, the latest quicktime should play it nicely. I have no control over the encoding, sorry.

That's a great video, i enjoyed watching it, it was very informative both for me (a person who has a decent idea of how locks and lockpicking work) as well as several people i've shown it to (who have not got a clue what lockpicking is about, well now they do...).

The safecracking was nice to put in between, and it really showed me what bogota's were all about. It was a lot of watching the entrails of locks, but then again, in essence, one needs to know his locks to pick them.

Alltogether, it was a great video and i loved watching it.
All i can say is "please, more!"

Yours,

Jordy

PS: on the website of TOOOL, i saw that the next Dutch Open will be at 'What the hack' in Den Bosch on July the 28th. Will you be there too?

July 28th I'll be somewhere between NYC and Las Vegas. I'm not ready for competition... Yet.

Glad you liked the video. Hopefully the content was'nt too much in violation of board rules (safe manipulation discussion). Deviants slides are some of the best diagrams I've ever seen. I was glad to finally be able to share a stage with him.

There are two things I thought let it down: Deviant Ollam failed to say that the Michaud attack has now been PREVENTED by modified top pins which stop such an attack.

and...

I thought lever locks didn't get enough attention.

Other than this I think it was well put together, and had some decent stuff. I knew you had a trick in your hat. :P

Actually, Eric did mention it (his voice was so trashed that it might have been hard to understand), but they found that it was usually only deployed in master key systems, not the run of the mill single key locks. If you have information otherwise, please let one of us know details so we can update things.

We were *REALLY* pressed for time. I would have liked to have done a dissection of the safe deposit lock that deviant had and compared it to the larger one I had, but time just did'nt allow it. It's tough to jam all that into 2 hours.

I agree the slides were very good the only thing that let it down for me was when the jacknife came out but at least it was mentioned they are crap and the one in the video had been modified.

Lever locks arent going to be high on the list when the place the talk is being done doesnt have any (or many) lol
